Remark :

These two manganese steel dredge buckets can be found at 1 Lasam. Each bucket bears a number - 387 & 498, respectively - just below the rim.

We believe these buckets were once part of a chain or bucket ladder of a tin dredge. The buckets would cut into the tin-bearing ground ahead of the dredge, as it moved forward and transport the tin bearing material up and into the dredge -  for the first stage of extraction of the ore. The bucket then returned into the water and earth upside down and empty. Labourers (also known as 'bucket coolies') would be standing by the ladder; and their task was to clear the buckets of any rubbish (wood, tree stumps, construction material etc) that might jam the bucket ladder. A jammed ladder often led to a broken chain and many days of lost production.
