A graduate of Oxford University, Sir Henry spent much of his service in Hong Kong where he learnt to speak both Hokkien and Cantonese. No doubt these were invaluable assets when he was appointed Chief Justice of the Federated Malay States in 1926, succeeding Chief Justice Mr L. M. Woodward.
