Remark :

The picture shows the Eastern Hotel, located at the junction of Brewster Road and Cockman Street. It was designed and built by B M Iversen (a Danish architect) before the war. In the 1970s, this hotel offered luxuriously furnished rooms, which were not only air-conditioned but had their own installed television sets. Based on the advertisement, the hotels rates were as follows (as of 1971):

Standard Room - $25.00 (Single); $35.00 (Twin)

Superior Room - $35.00 (Single); $45.00 (Twin)

De Luxe Room - $45.00 (Single); $55.00 (Twin)

We were told by Ken Chan that: the property was owned by the family of Lee Kwee Foh, and one of the grandsons (Peter Lee) was the manager. On the ground floor of the hotel was the Fung Lum Restaurant, which specialised in Cantonese cuisine. The restaurant later moved to a bigger space behind the Lido Cinema; when Fung Lum closed, the shop was leased to Public Seafood Restaurant. The space, in Eastern Hotel, was then converted to Le Rendezvous Cocktail Lounge
