Location : Brewster Road, Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1953
Media Type : Photograph

Remark :

The picture shows a man posing in front of the Sun Cinema - which was once at the corner of Brewster Road and Leech Street. In the far right corner of the picture is part of a trishaw. We have based the year of this pictured on information from Mano, one of our Blog readers who told us that a search on the ‘net’ reveals that the movie ,’Thanthai’ (Tamil for Father )is the 1953 Tamil version of the 1952 Malayalam movie,’Achan’. A Telugu version,’Thanri’ was also released in 1953.

Based on this evidence we have dated the entry as 1953.

The following comments are also from other Blog Readers who have other thoughts:

“The Rare Breed” starring James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara was a 1966 Western film. You can Google it or search Wiki. However, in those years Sun Cinema was showing reruns or second round films. Thus, the year is probably after 1966.

In the bill board of Sun Cinema, Shaw Brothers were advertising the Rare Breed (1966) in Rex cinema and maybe “The Love Bug” in Lido. (1968)release). Rex sometimes showed re-run movies and not Lido in those days. The black frame glasses and hairstyle of the person in the photo fits the late 1960s. From these evidence, I conclude that the photo was taken in late 1968 or early 1969.

Although the picture on the poster of what is showing at Lido is not very clear, I can tell it is not “Love Bug” because: the look of the car and character does not look like it also “Love Bug” played at Cathay and not Lido. This I am very positive. Although I was only 6 when I saw that movie, I had the most wonderful day with lots of smiles and laughter seeing such the most hilarious comedy movie. One will always remember the happy moments the most when all else in my life was not so happy at the time. If the movie poster is “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, then it is probably 1968.
