JJ Series - Selibui Road, Ipoh
The pictures show the front and back of a blank divided-back postcard, printed by Kronheim Printers, London. The first picture shows Selibui Road - which is fact is Silibin Road, Ipoh. From what we found out from the book ‘Perak Postcards: 1890s-1940s‘, this photo probably shows the early intake dam and waterworks in Selibin (Silibin today). To quote from the book:
“Water supply to Ipoh was originally conveyed from Selibin (also spelt Selebin). The great want there [in Ipoh] at present is a good water supply. This can be met by bringing water in pipes from Selibin, a distance of some three miles, and the Datoh Penglima Kinta has offered to undertake the work“.
Kronheim & Co was founded by a German-born lithographer and wood engraver named Joseph Martin Kronheim. We believe the date of this postcard ranged from 1905 – 1910. This postcard was part of what is known as the J. J. Series - most likely named after J. J. Kronheim (one of Joseph's grandsons).
We managed to contact Mic, who runs a weblog titled GeorgeBaxter.com, and he gave us a little more history about Kronheim and his printing business. The story can be found via the pdf link.
