Remark :

The Latexometer is used to measure the Specific Gravity of raw latex as t is brought into the rubber factory or collection centre by the rubber tappers to ensure that the latex is pure and not contaminated by water. It comes with an original instruction sheet.

Today Latexometers are calibrated in grams of dry rubber per litre of latex and adjusted at 28.9°C (84°F). The one in our collection, being pre-Merdeka (Independence) is calibrated in gallons of latex rather than litres. The calibration is 0.5/2.5 lbs/gallons at 28.9°C.

G H ZEAL have manufactured and supplied instrumentation for the measurement of Temperature, Density, Humidity, Pressure and Flow since 1888. They have a 129 year history of manufacturing and supplying thermometers, from general purpose to disposable thermometers, hydrometers, hygrometers, flowmeters and pressure gauges/recorders to medical, scientific, industrial and research institutions. They are represented in 25 countries.

The e-book below reproduces a paper by Hugh Smith on the accuracy of latex hydrometers (Latexometers)’donated by Ipoh Remembered.

 Ipoh Remembered offers:

“Hugh Fairfield Smith, a statistician of some repute, came to Malaya in '37 to work for the Rubber Research Institute. Hailing from Scotland, he brought experience gained in the UK, in Australia, and in the United States.

Both Hugh and his wife Alice enjoyed their time in Malaya, not counting the years of captivity during the Japanese Occupation. They left for the United States finally in '49 or '50 but, sad to say, the marriage did not last much longer.

After Malaya, apart from his academic work in Trinidad, in the United States, and elsewhere, Hugh also served as a consultant to the UN. He died in '74.

Alice, meanwhile, had moved to Australia, where she, too, lived her own second or third life. She died in '92.”
