Estimated Year : 1956
Media Type : Ephemera

Remark :

This old calendar from GEC features what we believe to be famous movie actresses from the 1940’s and 50’s. Unfortunately the calendar does not give their names and it needs a senior movie-goer to recognize them. The first picture shows the front cover of the calendar, while the pdf link show the pages from January to December.

From what we know, featured for the month of January is none other than Audrey Hepburn; according to Ngai C O, Marlene Dietrich is featured in July. As we get names we will include them in this entry. Another blog reader - Shen Ooi - told us: Apr – Claire Bloom; Jun – Virginia McKenna; Nov – Siobhan McKenna; Dec – Jean Peters. If anyone could give us more names, we'd love to hear from you.

The General Electric Company of England (GEC), not to be confused with the American company General Electric (GE), has its roots in G. Binswanger and Company an electrical goods wholesaler based in London in the 1880’s and established by a German-Jewish immigrant, Gustav Binswanger (later Gustav Byng).

The name GEC appeared in 1886 when a fellow immigrant, Hugo Hirst, joined Byng, and the company changed its name to The General Electric Apparatus Company (G. Binswanger).

In 1889, the business was incorporated as a private company known as General Electric Company Ltd. The company was expanding rapidly, opening new branches and factories and trading in 'everything electrical', a phrase that was to become synonymous with GEC.

In the early 1950’s a branch was formed in Malaya as GEC (Malaya). The name was changed to Mahkota Technologies in 1998 and offers integrated turnkey solutions in infrastructure, development and engineering solutions, products and services to the various industries.

This calendar printed by B & M Printers of 130 Mindon Road Cumberland UK (specialist in printing, copying and graphic design) would have been issued to all its branches and thus it came to Malaysia.
