A Ballet In Ipoh

Subject :A Ballet In Ipoh

Location : Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1963
Media Type : Photograph
Source : Sybil de Roquigny, France
Remark :

The first picture shows the cast of Les Sylphides (a ‘white ballet’ or ballet blanc).

Our donor, Sybil de Roquigny, says this ballet was performed in Ipoh. We think the cast could be from Main Convent – but we could be wrong. We hope someone out there can shed some light on this. If you know more, do let us know.

The second picture is the back of the photograph, with autographs by the cast.

Ipoh Remembered shared something about this ballet with us:

"I attended this show in Ipoh at the SMI School Hall in June of ’63. As you can see from the costumes on stage, the dancers did not perform from “Les Sylphides” only but from other suites as well.

The show was organized pretty much single-handedly by Premita Gill. It was sponsored by the Federation Arts Council, Perak branch, which was in those days new and active in Ipoh.

Premita was an energetic young woman who ran three dancing schools simultaneously in Ipoh, Penang, and Alor Star. (The kids you see in the photograph are her students.) She used to dash about in a red MG and eventually left teaching, taking off for the US in the late ’60s."
