Estimated Year : 1970

Remark :

A series of advertisements from the 1970s. From left to right:

  • Chau Kee Restaurtant: Yau Tet Shin Market (upstairs), Cowan Street, Ipoh
  • Choo Kong Restaurant: No. 13, Clare Street, Ipoh
  • Fung Lum Restauratn: No. 118, Brewster Road, Ipoh

Ipoh Remembered adds:

"Fung Lum was originally a Hong Kong restaurant opened in the early ’50s by the Pang family. After opening a couple of other restaurants there, the Pangs opened for business in Taiwan before coming to Malaysia, and even had several locations in the United States (all in California; one is still open today). As you may be aware, the Ipoh location opened in ’71 (when the building was renovated by Lee Kwee Foh’s family at a cost of about a million dollars).

I should probably mention that the restaurant was named after the founder’s home village in South China. “Fung Lum” means “grove of maple trees.” The advertisement displayed above does not show it but if you look here instead:

http://www.ipohworld.org/2013/04/17/fung-lum-restaurant/

… you will see a different advertisement for the restaurant that includes an image of a maple leaf.

As you may have deduced by now, the Maple Leaf Coffee Court was also run by the Pang family. It provided Western fare."

Editors note: Maple Leaf was part of the Eastern Hotel.

  • Hung Wang Kedai Makan: No. 7&9, Leong Sin Nam Street, Ipoh
  • Sakura Restaurant: No. 4, Anderson Road, Ipoh
