Dome Of A Hindu Temple

Thumbnail :

Subject :Dome Of A Hindu Temple
Published By : None
Location : Lahat Road, Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1948
Media Type : Photograph
Source : Ann Kesselring Hamon, Wisconsin, USA
Remark :

The first image shows the dome of a Hindu Temple, along Lahat Road. We believe this structure is part of the Sri Thandayuthapani Alayam temple - which is nearby Anglo Chinese School Ipoh (ACS Ipoh), Ipoh. Read more about this temple from the Ipoh Echo article here.

This temple is popularly known as Chettiar Kovil and is adjacent to the Chettiar Tamil school, SJKT Chettiar.

We thank our donor Ann (daughter of Ralph Kesselring) for sharing this picture with us.

The second image is taken from the Ipoh Echo article mentioned below. It has been somewhat extended since 1948 when Ann was here in Ipoh.

The third picture is the inside of the temple taken by Ian Andersom in 2010.

Behind the temple is the popular Arasamarathu Pillaiyar or Pillaiyar under the peepal tree. Pillaiyar is the Elephant God and is known for removing obstacles from life and also bestowing material prosperity and wisdom to his devotees. This is a 24-hour shrine and devotees come and worship throughout the day and night.

The fourth and fifth pictures are of this Temple Tree again taken by Ian Anderson in 2010.

There is an original ipohWorld eBook here that explains the role of the Chettiar, the school and the temple.

Ipoh Remembered tells us:

"Despite what the Ipoh Echo article says, that temple on Lahat Road was not more than 120 years old when the article was written; nor is it today. It was completed in 1905.

You'd think the chairman of the Temple Committee could be relied upon to know how old his temple is, but, as in the case of other institutions (such as the Ipoh Club), I suppose local records must have been lost, perhaps during the Occupation.

War is hell."
