Immigrant Lee Cheong & His Wife, Sia Yu Jin, Ipoh
These photographs taken by the Rex Studio in 1964 show Lee Cheong, born 1902, founder of the famous Beef Noodle Stall in Ipoh, which has been in operation by the same family for more than 70 years, and his wife Sia Yu Jin born in 1917.
They both came from his home town Phunyu, Guangdung, China, but where and exactly when they were married is not known although it was most probably in Ipoh around 1936.
Their first child, daughter Yea Sin, was born in Ipoh in 1938 and eventually they had a family of four boys and four girls in total. At some time they have all worked on the Beef Noodles stall and three of the girls and one boy still do so on a regular basis.
Sia Yu Jin passed away in 1978 aged 61 while Lee Cheong followed her in 1981. He was aged 79 years and his legacy of the best beef noodles in Ipoh remains with us today (2007).
