The English translation of the above text is as follows:
Prof Dato' (Dr) Ungku Omar bin Ahmad (1931-1969)
Many may not be familiar with this name. He was a great contributor; to both the field of modern medicine, and towards uplifting the health standards of the rural folk.
He was the first doctor and researcher from the local Malay community. The fruits of his research led to the following findings:
- Mortality rates in rural areas were 6 times higher than urban areas
- Diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, anemia contributed to poverty within the community
- There was a lack of knowledge regarding healthy eating and a balanced diet
Besides the medical field, Prof Dato Dr Ungku Omar also played a significant role in the following events:
- Suggested the building of an Islamic University at an Organisation Seminar, at Kolej Islam in 1967
- The establishment of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), when he was appointed as one of the Board Members of said university; Bahasa Melayu, or the Malay language, was subsequently used as the medium of instruction
He has published and presented more than 40 working papers on topics ranging from: medicine, the concept of an Islamic University, establishing UKM, as well as the role of the youth in the development of the country.
When appointed as Chairman of the Board of overseeing medical jargon in Johor Bahru, he was involved in enriching the medical vocabulary in the local dictionaries – which was approved by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
On 15 February 1969, this patriotic doctor passed away at the young age of 38. However, he managed to provide great devotion and service to the nation.
Thank you, Prof Dato Dr Ungku Omar.
