Subject :A Large Bamboo Upright Opium Water Pipe

Location : Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1900
Media Type : Artifact
Source : Ian Anderson, Ipoh / Kinta Properties Group
Remark :

Pipes of this style have been used for smoking both opium and tobacco in years gone by. If used with tobacco it would be a water pipe where the smoke would be cooled by passing through water before it reached the mouthpiece. However, the small size of the aperture on this particular item leads one to believe that this must be an upright opium pipe rather than for tobacco. The pipe is made of bamboo with brass fittings and a bamboo mouthpiece. It measures 40cm tall.
