Subject :Opium Container - Material Bronze

Location : Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1890
Media Type : Artifact
Source : Ian Anderson, Ipoh / Kinta Properties Group
Remark :

This small bronze covered jar or urn was used to hold the opium that the smoker bought as he entered the den. Just a small amount barely enough to cover the bottom of the jar would lull the tired coolie and his aching limbs into a state of total relaxation. Sadly the more times he attended this therapy the more opium he needed until every cent of his wages would be spent this way. Death was usually the only way out. The jar measures 4cm tall and 3cm in diameter.
