A Solitary Car Passing The Sun Cinema, Ipoh

Location : Brewster Road, Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1960
Media Type : Photograph
Source : Hong Soon Kheong, Kuala Lumpur
Remark :

The photograph shows a solitary car (Ford?) approaching the Sun Cinema (right of picture). At the time, both Hugh Low Street and Brewster Road carried two-way traffic.

Unusually situated in Old Town, North of Kinta River, The Sun Cinema was on the riverbank next to the bridge and it could have easily been bypassed if you were not aware of it. At one time it was an impressive building, but by the 1970’s had become run down and no longer a shining example of the Shaw Brothers magnificent theatres. It showed mainly Indian movies, but one piece of historic fame is that it was featured by cartoonist Lat in his book on Ipoh, “Town Boy” as the place where he once took the local beauty, Norma to see the film Tarzan. Later demolished, the site is now (2008) a car park.
