Remark :

This book, written by D E Moreton and published in the year 1977 was in memory of John Lowe Woods, founder of the law company Maxwell, Kenion, Cowdy and Jones, and a barrister of Ipoh in the State of Perak, Malaya. The book, attempts to give a picture of a man still remembered with affection and great respect for his cultural contributions, friendships, and deep interest in the people of this town and country. It is the outcome of conversations and contacts with his widow, sisters and late brother, his former school and university friends, his law firm and sports associates, and his fellow internees in the Changi Gaol and Sime Road Japanese camps in Singapore.

The author knew John L Woods, former President of the Perak Badminton Association and later the founder and first President of the Badminton Association of Malaya in 1934, for more than 20 years as her lawyer. She used to meet him at Committee Meetings of the Perak Badminton Association as a player herself, at the local Young Men’s Christian Association and at the Young Women’s Christian Association’s concert where he sang frequently and also at the Ipoh Choral Society Association.

During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, Woods was interned in Changi Gaol and Sime Road Camps. His untimely death in March 1956 cut short a gifted life of great artistic ability used in many directions in the service of others.

As the book is out of print and currently unobtainable, a photocopy is held in our archive library for easy reference. An original copy is held by the Royal Ipoh Club Library.
