Location : Ipoh, Perak
Estimated Year : 1967
Media Type : Artifact

Remark :

This is a badge issued by the Perak Chinese Association in commemoration of the founding of the association. It is gold in colour with a string of Chinese characters embossed across the top of the badge which read “In commemoration of the founding of the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall”. At the bottom of the badge the date “1967.11.12” is inscribed. It bears the image of a hall-front in the centre of the badge, sandwiched between the names of the association in Chinese above it, and in English below it. Being gold coloured and an anniversary we would guess that this is celebrating the associations 50th year. We might be wrong.

As far as we know there is currently no organisation in Perak that goes by the name of “The Perak Chinese Association”. The Chinese name printed on the badge however is the exact name used by an association which in English is called the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall.

According to the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall’s website, the group has been in existence for 79 years but it is unclear when this history was written so we can only speculate as to when the group was formed, but coupled with the assumption above, 1917 seems like a good guess. Initially the association’s registered address was the current address of SMJK Yuk Choy, Ipoh, along Jalan Kuala Kangsar. For the advancement of Chinese schools, the piece of land was given up to be turned into a school. The Perak Chinese Assembly Hall formally shared an address with the Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry along Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Ipoh. Their current address is now 46-A, Jalan Raja Ekram (Cowan Street).

The organisation plays a major role in unifying the Chinese from every district and region in the state. Their undertakings are varied, having interests in the welfare and culture, education and economy of the state’s Chinese community, not to mention their avid participation in philanthropy. Hence the structure of the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall includes divisions in charge of specific aims like internal affairs, external affairs, welfare, education etc. The youth and women’s divisions also contribute significantly to the organization.

Due to the generosity and passionate participation of the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall in the advancement of Chinese nationwide, their president has twice been elected the President of the National Chinese Assembly Hall.
