Remark : The picture shows Mrs Treacher, wife of William Hood Treacher (later Sir William), who was the sixth British Resident of Perak from 1896 to 1902 and then the first Governor of North Borneo. She is standing outside the cottage on Maxwell Hill known as ‘The Hut’.

Maxwell hill was the first hill station in Peninsula Malaya (Penang Hill was earlier) and was named after its discoverer, William Edward Maxwell who was appointed Assistant Resident of Perak in 1875, not long after British Resident J W W Birch's murder. Just 6km away from Taiping, the ridge rose to 1250 metres, with a narrow and steep climb to the summit. Indeed only the strongest could make it to the top unless transported by pony or in a mountain chair carried by coolies. Nonetheless government servants and visitors like Isabella Bird made their way to the top and cottages were built to allow them to enjoy the cool air. Each cottage had its name and ‘The Hut’ was one of them. Others had names, relating to their owner or style, like 'The Cottage' , 'Treacher', 'Watson's Rest House', 'The Federal Bungalows', Speedy's Chalet , 'The Nest' and 'The Box'.
