This photograph shows the Chung Thye Phin Building under construction at the corner of Belfield Street and Station Road. Completed in 1909 it first housed the Medical Hall established by Dr R M Connolly.

Dr R M Connolly was a pre-eminent European doctor in Ipoh. He first came to Kinta as the District Surgeon of Batu Gajah and later became the state surgeon. Knowing that The Times of Malaya was in trouble, he retired from government service to put the paper on a firm footing.

Being a man of diverse social commitments, he was president of the Perak Anti-Opium Society and president of the Navy League. He also made money on mines and plantations and acquired a residence which was described as ‘one of the handsomest buildings in the FMS’.
