Richard & Swee Lan At The Memorial Fountain
This photograph was taken in Ipoh on 12 April 1963. We believe that the children are posing beside the Memorial Fountain; the fountain is now gone and in its place is a car park (near the present Perak State Mosque).
According to one of our Blog Readers - Ipoh Remembered:
"When the so-called “Emergency” ended in 1960, there was talk of building a war memorial. “The younger generation and the generations to come must be reminded of the price we had to pay to live in peace and prosperity,” said MCA State Assemblyman Liew Why Hone.
At the time, Ipoh’s Waller-Seenivasagam-Seenivasagam Town Council was committed to a number of projects, not least the installation of parking meters, the renovation of the Library, the replacement of Yau Tet Shin’s original market at Cowan/Theatre Streets, the building of a sewer system, and the creation of the Tasek industrial estate. The state and federal governments were already helping to fund some of these projects. As funds for the new memorial were therefore limited, the empty space across from the Post Office was simply taken in hand, spruced up a bit, and called “Emergency Memorial Park.” The Bunga Raya Fountain and associated landscaping, designed by (the same) Liew Why Hone, were installed by early 1962. Total cost: $50,000"
We thank Ipoh Remembered for the above information. We welcome anyone else who has information about this fountain.
