Remark : From March 1958, the 1st Battalion of the New Zealand Regiment replaced the New Zealand SAS Squadron and as part of the 28th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade Group took part in operations designed to clear Perak of insurgents. It mounted a series of deep jungle patrols from Ipoh and Grik, in which it achieved great success.

The picture shows members of the 1st Battalion on anti communists patrol during the Malayan Emergency, believed to be in the area around the Perak/Pahang border and not far from Fort Brooke to the east. Clearly the Malay man riding his bicycle is so used to seeing fully armed combat troops he does not even give them a second glance.

The Battalion was divided into:

HQ Company and Battalion HQ - based at Sobrain Camp, some 80 miles North of Taiping.

A and C Companies - at Sungei Kuang.

B Company - at Tanjong Rambutan, situated in a rubber plantation, and

D Company - at Tanah Hitam.
