Remark : On the left the picture shows a Saracen armoured personnel carrier (APC) and next to it is the Ferret Scout Car. The vehicles are believed to have been serving with the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars (QRIH) in Ipoh when the photographs were taken in 1963.
The Alvis Saracen was a six-wheeled APC used by the British army that became a recognisable vehicle as a result of its part in the policing of Northern Ireland. It weighed 10 tons and could reach a top speed of 70km/h. However it was first produced because of the urgent need for a personnel carrier to serve in the Malayan Emergency. Consequently it commenced production in 1952 and came to Malaya the same year.
The Ferret Scout Car is a British armoured fighting vehicle designed and built for reconnaissance purposes. The Ferret was produced between 1952 and 1971 by the UK Company, Daimler. It was widely adopted by regiments in the British Army as well as Commonwealth countries throughout the period and saw a lot of action during the Malayan Emergency.
The photos were processed by Sing Chow Photo Studio using D & P Color Films at Ipoh on 15 March 1963.
There is much more information on these vehicles on the web and http://en.wikipedia.org/ provides a good introduction to them.
