Remark : Psywars techniques have been used in every war and emergency since 1945. Broadcasting and distributing leaflets by air to insurgents has been an effective means of communication or persuasion and these techniques proved extremely successful in the Malayan emergency.
The images show a typical air dropped leaflet from the Malayan emergency 1948 to 1960. There are several more on this archive.
Produced for the Penerangan region on 7 March 1953, this double-sided leaflet features, on the reverse, a sketch of a miserable and wet communist sitting under a tree in the pooring rain. On the front the text reads:
"Why Are You Living Exposed to Wind and Rain?"
Your activity in the Jungle, always wearing wet clothes, sleeping on wet ground, is making yourself weak with diseases of the lungs, TB and Rheumatism and the like.
Do You Have the Above Symptoms?
Without proper medical treatment, they are fatal! The government hospitals provide good treatment, not only avoiding death, you will recover and live a new life!
