Remark : Propaganda has been used to hasten the surrender of enemy personnel with the minimal loss of life across many theatres of war. There were various methods of propaganda warfare used during the Malayan Emergency, particularly leaflets of which some 60,000 were dropped every month. The leaflets either drew the attention of the CTs to their weaknesses and what would happen to them if they refused to surrender. or offered substantial rewards, free pardons, hospital treatment and the like. This was a very successful operation that resulted in many surrenders.
The image above is one such leaflet, addressed to "All Members of Malayan Communist Party, Malayan Liberation Army and Min Yuen Forces" and signed by Sir Harold Briggs, Director of Anti-Bandit Operations. This single-sided leaflet offers a range of cash awards for capture, or information leading to killing of terrorists. They range from $1000 for the lower levels to $30,000 for the Secretary General of the Central Executive Committee. Other rewards for capture of arms ammunition or earlier-named individuals are also noted.
