Remark :

Sir Geoffrey Edmund Cator CMG was born in 1884, the son of Robert Cator of Bath and joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1907 as a cadet. He was first appointed to Kuala Kangsar where he became Collector of Land Revenue and often joined the Malay College students for a game of football, a game with which he shared some skill.

After a wide range of appointments he became British Resident of Brunei in May 1916. In March 1921 he was transferred to Singapore as Superintendent of Government Monopolies of the Straits Settlements. Other appointments followed including District Officer, Klang and membership of the Legislative Council of the Federated Malay States.

In 1932 he was appointed British Resident of Selangor and the following year as British Resident of Perak, a post he held until 1939 when he returned to London as Head of the Malay States Information Agency. He was awarded a knighthood (CMG) in 1936 while serving in Perak.

Married to Elizabeth Margaret Wynne Mostyn in 1922, he passed away in 1973 at Lacock, Wiltshire, England.

Ipoh Remembered also added, "He retired as Malayan Agent in 1948. While in that post, one of his duties in London after the war was to visit Sybil Karthigesu in hospital, a task he performed sincerely, honorably, and in the company of Lizzy, his wife. Among his more important  preoccupations in Perak was the use of modern medicine, particularly quinine in the treatment of malaria." We thank Ipoh Remembered for the second picture (right) of Sir Cator.
