Group Photograph To Mark The Furlough Of Chief ADO H J Cockman Chief Assistant District Officer Kinta
Taken outside the Magistrates Court in Batu Gajah on 21st September 1937 this group photo marks the going on leave (furlough) of the Chief ADO, Herbert James COCKMAN, DFC MCS, probably home to Britain after three years on station.
He returned to Perak after his leave and with the onset of war became a Major, 1st (Perak) Battalion, Federated Malay States Volunteer Force. He died 15th February 1942. Aged 43.
Son of George Herbert and Mabel Mary Cockman; husband of Mary Campbell Cockman, of Sherborne, Dorsetshire, he has no known grave, but is commemorated on Kranji War Cemetery Memorial, Singapore. Column 389. The latter information was taken from http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Overseas/SingaporeCivilService.html.
After the war, a street was named Cockman Street in Ipoh, in his honour. Previously the street had been named (in 1924) Toko Street to honour Toko Heihachiro, the Japanese General who, in 1904, had won a great victory over Russian forces, but after the Japanese atrocities during the occupation, the street was quickly renamed.
Today the same street is known as Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar. This information courtesy of ‘Random Notes on Ipoh and its Surroundings by Choo Choong Yin’(written in Chinese).
