Before a decision can be reached whether to open a tin mine the land must be prospected and borings made to discover the amount of tin ore in the ground and estimate whether mining operations can be expected to be profitable.
Samples of the earth below are collected in the hollow tube inside the boring tool through a one-way valve.
The boring tool is forced down deep into the earth and from samples of the ground through which it passes the percentage of tin ore per cubic yard of earth is calculated.
If from initial boring it appears that sufficient tin ore is present for mining to be profitable the area is most frequently further bored systematically at closer intervals to estimate the tin content of the whole area and obtain a correct assessment from which mining costs and profits can be estimated.
