He became the Raja Muda in 1938 following the death of his uncle and ascended the throne as the 32nd Sultan of Perak in 1948, after the death of Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah. During his years as the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Yusuf was awarded the Honorary KCMG. Sultan Yusuf died on the 4th of January, at the age of 72. He was succeded by Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakkil Alallahi Shah.

The caption at the bottom right of the picture reads as:

“Mr Lim Keng Hor, on behalf of Mrs Tan Chin Tuan and Mrs Loke Wan Tho, whose horse, Khor Mousa, easily won the rich 1 ½ mile Perak Derby by six lengths at Ipoh on Saturday, is seen above receiving the Derby Trophy from the Sultan of Perak."

The race was held at the Perak Turf Club. The Perak Derby dates back to 1950 when the race was won by Indian Heather, over a distance of 2415m.
