Hash House Harriers, Ipoh – Souvenir Magazine
Hashing is said to have originated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya, back in 1938. According to Wikipedia, it started out when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting on Monday evenings to run – similar to the traditional British ‘Paper Chase’ or ‘Hare and Hounds’. Among the original members were Cecil Lee, Albert Stephen (AS) Ignatius Gispert and John Woodrow. After some months, As Gispert suggested the name ‘Hash House Harriers’ since as a group they needed an official name and a constitution. At the end of the run, the ‘harriers’ were rewarded with beer, ginger beer and cigarettes; hence the members would refer to their group as ‘a drinking club with a running problem’.
The pictures shown are the front (left) and back (right) cover of the 23rd Year of Hashing souvenir magazine, by the Hash House Harriers of Ipoh. The magazine is dated 14th November 1987. Included in the magazine’s contents are pictures and commentaries from a recent run. The back cover shows an advertisement by Anchor Draft, (Anchor Beer)one of the sponsors.
