Curfew Permit

Thumbnail :

Subject :Curfew Permit
Published By : OCPD of Ipoh
Location : Ipoh, Perak
Estimated Year : 1956
Media Type : Ephemera
Source : Ian Anderson, Ipoh / Kinta Properties Group
Remark :

During the Malayan Emergency, a resettlement programme called the Briggs Plan was implemented (1950-54) to weaken the non-uniformed Communists (known as the Min Yuen). The plan was to cut them off from the rural settlers who were the source of food, money, information and new recruits. A curfew was also declared during the Communist insurgency.

These pictures show a curfew permit which was issued to Mr Lee Ah How by the OCPD of Ipoh. Mr Lee was a village councilor for Kampong Tawas. On the left, the inside of the permit, is a passport sized photograph of Mr Lee and also a record of renewals for his permit. On the right (front of permit) are the instructions written in English and Malay. The instructions read as follows :

“In exercise of the powers conferred on me by Regulation 20 para 2(e) of the Emergency Regulations 1948 I PBG Waller OCPD Ipoh hereby exempt the holder of this pass from normal curfew restrictions between Kampong Tawas and Ipoh between the hours of curfew. This pass is valid until 31-8-56”.
