    POSTCRIPT

We received the following email from Valerie Yeow which provides an extra twist in the tail of this story that the Army never told us.

"I wanted to comment on the picture of the Christmas party organized by the British army for the orphans in 1956. I had just turned 6 at that time and remember a comical sight of a Santa Claus stuffed with gifts, presumably, stuck to a huge tree at the bottom of Seenivasagam St.

The plane had missed its target! I lived on Green Lane at time, and I remember all the children from Green Lane, Green Hiil Drive, Seenivasagam St. and probably Cowan St. rushing out to look at this most remarkable scene. For me it has always been memorable as my first encounter with Santa Claus."
