Remark :

These two documents, badly faded and barely legible in parts, hang on the wall of the first floor of Han Chin Pet Soo, the Hakka miners club, founded by Leong Fee.

  • On the left is a framed copy of the original memo sent by the District Magistrate, Kinta to the Assistant Magistrate Ipoh, on the 1st February 1897. It reads:

    MEMO

    The members of the Chinese Club, Ipoh have permission to gamble in their house pending the issue of a formal licence.

  • On the right is a framed Club Registration Certificate dated the 12th June 1950 issued by the Registrar of Societies, Federation of Malaya, in accordance with the Societies (Registration) Rules 1949 (Rule 3). It reads:

    In accordance with the provisions of Section 5 of the Societies Ordinance 1949, I hereby

    exempt from registration under the said Ordinance

    the Han Chin Pet Soo
    No. 3, Treacher Street, Ipoh.
    Exemption No.34 (Perak)

    This 12th day of June, 1950.

    Below this at the bottom of the form is a faint "Registrar of Societies" Chop and a faded, illegible signature of the Registrar.
