Remark : Helen Colman was born in Ireland in1913. The youngest of 6 children, she joined the Congregation of the Infant Jesus Sisters at age 21. As a nun, she devoted her life to the education of children. In 1958, she was appointed the Principal of St Bernadettes Convent in Batu Gajah, Perak – a position she served with great passion for 15 years!
Students and teachers would remember Sr Colman as the tall, slender, fair, blue-eyed nun who was always cheerful and pleasant. She had a warm smile and a good sense of humour. She loved children and would proudly call the Convent her home and everyone her family. Sr Colman was also known to be a firm and good disciplinarian; she would encourage the students, especially the weaker ones, and prompted them to do better. Some would recall her famous phrase “Is this your best?” – which brought out the best in the students.
Sr Colman retired in 1973. Before leaving for Ireland, she initiated the Convent Old Girls’ Association (COGA). After leaving for Ireland, she became active in pastoral work in Crewe, UK. In 1993, she fell ill. Sr Colman later passed away on the 13th of October 1993, in England.
