Estimated Year : 1962
Media Type : Artifact

Remark :

This framed document on the wall of the Mahjong Room on the first floor of the Hakka miners’ club founded by Leong Fee is a gift from Yap Yoong Xin to Han Zen Pek Su to remind the members of their heritage.

The illustrations are taken from a book (probably from the Hakka or Ka Yin Associations) which in direct translation is called Malaya: Ipoh’s Village Talk. This record is dated 9 January 1962, which we believe is the date that the gift was prepared.

The pictures depict different places in Ka Yin County, Guandong Province, from where many of the Hakka people came. Top left shows the town of Xin Ning and below it Woo Hua. Top right the first two pictures are Mei Xian while the two below show Jiao Liang.

The three portraits are of famous men and great achievers. They are, left to right: Wang Gong Du, a poet and ambassador of China; Soong Siong, a scholar and Qiu Foong Jia, an educator. All originated from Ka Yin County. Below these portraits are 3 sets of calligraphy, on the left from Qiu Foong Jia, to the right from Soong Siong and on the far right presumably Wang Gong Du, but the name cannot be read.

Overall this is a very interesting document which demonstrates the donor’s pride in his home county.
