Source : Yeoh Saw Paik (Eluthesen) and Yeoh Keah Ooi, USA
Remark : Joyce Leong Yin Leng was the third daughter of Leong Eng Khean and Chow Yoon Soo. She was born in 1925 and was tall (5’4”), pretty, and had a good figure. As her husband Yeoh Ghim Leong was away in the United States studying medicine, she went out to work to secure her financial independence, and tried her hand managing a women’s boutique, owning a hair salon, and even organizing mahjong games.
She was a compassionate and courageous woman, as illustrated by this incident when she was just in her twenties. Once she found out that one of the “ladies” in the Yeoh extended household was cruelly mistreating a young maid, she immediately went up close to the action, and with tears streaming down her cheeks, she silently shamed that woman into stopping the abuse. In the 1980’s she emigrated to northern California to be close to her daughter, Janice Yeoh Saw Paik, and her son, Yeoh Kean Ooi.
On the left the photograph is dated as 1949 and on the right around 1979.
(Editor's Note: We understand that her mother-in-law was one of the last ladies in Ipoh with bound feet.)
