Remark : During 1957 – 1959 The 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), were stationed in a variety of billets in Malaya in support of the anti communist efforts. History records that “they helped in the closing stages of the jungle fighting against the communists in Malaya and then returned home”. Our donor’s husband, Raymond William Brookes was the batman to his OC. (even in the jungle!).

A Company's main base was Sungei Siput but they ventured far out from there in all directions, most of the time in the jungle. These areas included Khota Tingi, Bhatu Pahat, Ipoh, Chaah, Johore Bahru. During 1959-1960, the regiment was stationed at Burma Camp, Johore Bahru and then moved to Selarang Barracks, Singapore in 1960 prior to returning to UK.

The photograph shows 3 Platoon A Company in 1959, having returned to Burma Camp, Johor.

They are, from left to right:

Back Row: Privates Willett, Langley, Tensey, Peat, Brookes, Shaw, Smith, Finch.

Centre Row: Privates McKay, Tivey, Docker, Hoole, Groves, Waddy, Ellis, Rhodes, Hartshorn.

Front Row: Privates Walker, Shields, Corporal Housley, 2/Lieutenant Leitch RMP, Lance Corporal Poyser, Lance Corporal Skeggs, Private Atkinson.

Our donor, Lennie Brookes supplied this series of photographs of her husband's service in Malaya, but due to their wide-ranging areas of patrol we are unable to be precise as to the region that each set of images actually cover.
