Riley Hargreaves & Company Ltd Motor Garage Ipoh
This photograph shows Riley Hargreaves motor garage in Ipoh. The Riley Hargreaves branch of the well established Singapore company (founded 1865) was set up in Ipoh in June 1902 and specialised in electrification of mines, and mining equipment such as puddling machines and winding-gears. They also set up the first complete garage (pictured) in Kinta for repair and upkeep of motorcars.
A similar company, Howarth Erskine was also a regional engineering firm with their headquarters in Singapore.
Howarth established its first Perak branch in Taiping, while J R Crawfurd ran the Ipoh branch. Later on, the two comanies, Riley Hargreaves and Howarth Erskine, merged and formed the United Engineers.
