J R Crawford's Ipoh Foundry And His Home.

In early 1900 the Ipoh Foundry was started by J R Crawford. He was already well versed in local business having been the manager of Messrs Howarth, Erskine, Tate and Co, (formed by a merger between two Taiping companies) to service the mines in Kinta. The Ipoh Foundry premises on Lahat Road were set up in partnership with several well-known local Chinese Towkays who were interested or involved in mining, for foundry work is an important supporting trade to the mining business. Crawford was Managing Director while I G Allan, Foo Choo Choon, Chung Ah Yong and Eu Tong Sen were Directors. Well equipped and with so many Towkays as Directors, the foundry handled a major share of the work of the Chinese mines in the district.
The photograph on the left shows the Foundry buildings with the staff posing for the camera. On the right is J R Crawford’s home in Ipoh.
