Barber's Shop Tools (7) - The Cash Box
This type of cabinet, known as the barbers cash box is still very much in use today in traditional barbers shops, its size depending on the number of barbers employed in the shop. From the picture you will see that the Star Barber had 15 barbers working in shifts and therefore there are 15 slots cut into the drawers, one for each barber. Each time the customer paid his barber would slip the money into his own personal slot. At the end of the week the boss would count up each person;s takings, deduct his percentage and any known expenses (all carefully recorded in a book) and pay the barber whatever was left.
The spare drawer top right was where the account books were kept and the cupboards at the bottom held the towels and overall
