View Of D R Seenivasagam Park (Coronation Park), Ipoh
This divided back photochrome postcard, printed by Kuang Ming Press (Ipoh), shows D R Seenivasagm Park, at Anderson Lane, Ipoh. It was set up as Coronation Park in 1953 to commemorate the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizaneth II. It was later named after D R Seenivasagam, a prominent lawyer turned opposition politician who, with his brother, S P Seenivasagam, founded the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP).
S P and D R Seenivasagam were the sons of a prominent Jaffna Tamil (Sri Lankan Tamil) lawyer. As Ipoh Councillor and MP, it is claimed that D R drove Ipoh into modern development, to become the first town since Malayan Independence, to be elevated to a Municipality in 1962.
D R Seenivasagam Park is still one of the locals favourite recreation parks, with, among other attractions, its big football fields, bicycle park and beautiful lake with wooden bridge.
