Remark : This Panoramic photograph by Rex Photo Studio, shows the junction of Lahat Road and Jalan Datoh where there used to be a roundabout, since replaced by traffic lights. Apart from the odd vehicle or bicycle the streets are empty. To the right can be seen the Hotel Majestic and further right a Mobilgas Petrol Station. To the left of the roundabout there is a budget hotel, called in Chinese the East and South Hotel, taking up three of the shophouses.
The Majestic Hotel was originally the home of the Datoh Panglima Kinta Wahab. In 1909, Armenian, Pierre Z Creet bought the house to turn into The Grand Hote.l He was joined by his two brothers, Mackertich and Simon and the house was converted into a forty-room hotel. It was advertised as "the high life hostelry in the heart of Ipoh, incorporating all the facilities of a Sarkies hotel, plus concessions to Ipoh; a planters' and miners' lounge and smoking rooms, and a large motor garage". The Grand Hotel closed down in June 1918, amidst the economic stagnation of World War I. It was turned into the Majestic Hotel after the war.
