Cheong Chee's Mansion (2)
Part two of the series, showing Cheong Chee's mansion.
We received more comments on the Blog from our Readers regarding this mansion:
Jasemin Sibo
"This used to be my late maternal grandfather Cheong Chee’s family house. I never lived in it, but during its hey days it housed dozens of inhabitants including Cheong Chee himself, 2 wives, his mother, more than 10 children, drivers, cooks, gardeners, nannies etc. He made his riches during the tin mine boom."
Ken Chan
"The stately mansion that was once Kok Kee Restaurant belongs to Mr. Cheong Chee (1885-1954), a well-known tin miner and philanthropist in his time. He was the father of Dato Cheong Kai Fu, who was active in Malaysian politics at one time. Dato Cheong is the Chairman of Acme Ferrite Products Sdn. Bhd. The mansion was leased to the Kok family and for many years, Kok Kee was a very successful restaurant in town. However, I am not sure if the property is still a part of Cheong Chee’s estate or was it sold to the Kok family."
S.Y.Lee
"To Ken Chan’s question, the building does not belong to the Estate of Cheong Chee, deceased. Jasmin Sibo should be able to confirm this. I have the privilege of meeting Cheong Kai Wong (deceased), Cheong Kai Swee (deceased), Dato Cheong Kai Fu, Jasmin’s late mother and her late mother’s sisters.
For those who are interested, Kok Kee restaurant closed down after the building was sold. They were famous also for dim sum. The nephew has opened a restaurant for dim sum in Bercham, called the New Kok Kee. The late Cheong Chee also owned a lot of property in Tanjung Tualang. Someone should follow up with an article on that."
