Remark : This book is a study of the “Chinese working people” in the Kinta District in Perak. It traces the Tin Industry’s success story and its losses over a period of some 100 years and how the lives and livelihood of the Chinese people working in these mines have been affected by various structural processes – socio-economic and political – and how they in turn have adjusted themselves to these changing situations so as to improve their general well-being.

How such socio-economic and political transformations occurred; how they affected the working people, and how the latter responded to these changes to ensure their livelihood or to impress their well being, constitute the concerns of this book. It is in essence a study of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic processes.
