Location : Station Road Ipoh
Estimated Year : 1903

Remark : These photographs, all of the Chartered Bank in Ipoh and all on the same site, show the transition of the Bank and its name, marked by photographs of events or celebrations, between 1902 and 1957. The original photos are from the archives of the bank, lent to us via James Devadason an Ipoh lawyer.
Frpm left to right, top to bottom, the photographs show:
The first premises of the Ipoh Branch of the Chartered Bank Of India, Australia And China which opened on the corner of Station Road in 1902. We have similar photographs of this building, but this is the only one with a rickshaw and bicycle and as it is from the bank archives we believe it to be from 1902/1903.
The Bank in its new building commissioned in 1924 on the same site as their first premises. Here the building is decorated for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon, and Pakistan which took place on 2 June 1953. The building retains the original name, Chartered Bank Of India, Australia And China.
The same building now reflecting the new company name, The Chartered Bank, decorated for the occasion of the granting of Independence (Merdeka) to Malaya from Britain on 31 August 1957.
The Merdeka decorations floodlit on the same day.
