a.New Straits Times, Friday, 27-05-1988:

“Roads closed for City Day do from 28-05-1988 to 29-05-1988”. Several roads will be closed tomorrow and Saturday in conjunction with the City Day celebrations.

b.New Straits Times, Saturday, 28-05-1988: Smoother ride into Ipoh city – Road projects are under way said Ipoh’s first Datuk Bandar Datuk Haji Umar Haji Abu. He said $4 million had been spent on widening Jalan President Kennedy which would link Jalan Pasir Puteh to Jalan Gopeng. Work is expected to be completed this year. The other is a $5 million road to run parallel with Jalan Gopeng from the Ipoh airport to link up with Jalan President Kennedy. These two projects would complement the $30 million being spent to improve the Ipoh airport which would allow aircraft to land at night. Jalan Pasir Puteh is also being widened at a cost of $1.5 million. The city council is also considering erecting overhead pedestrian bridges at Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Sultan Iskandar. A bridge is also to be built to link Buntong and Jalan Gurdwara. This will be a short-cut for Buntong residents, now using Jalan Sungai Pari, to go to the city centre. House owners would be encouraged to plant bougainvillea, a hardy flowering plant. He added, “we want Ipoh to be known as bougainvillea city. More flats would be built in the city centre to encourage night life. At present many of the city’s hawkers are staying at the Waller Court flats. If not for these flats, the city would be dead at night. An international school for expatriate children may also be opened. Another golf course, especially to attract the Japanese who are keen players.” The datuk bandar pledged to further improve the drainage and sewerage systems in the city. Work on a new sewerage treatment plant for the new town, costing $15 milllion, will begin once funds are available.

Snapshot for his VIP album - Shoeshine boy, Mohammad Yunus Ahmad Tarmizi waited patiently in the wings of the Town Hall to get his picture taken with Ipoh’s first mayor, Datuk Haji Umar Haji Abu. The mayor obliged him and pose for the camera with him. Mohammad Yunus, 22, is also a familiar figure at the park in front of the Ipoh railway station where he conducts his famous “shoeshine concert” – belting out popular Malay numbers to the accompaniment of musical instruments to attract customers.

Museum to chart 120 years of growth - Ipoh city has a long history and a museum would be an ideal thing to capture its past. Artifacts and exhibits relating to its 120-year-old growth can be put on display in such a museum. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ramli Ngah Talib mooted this idea today at the opening of the History of Ipoh exhibition at the City Hall building. The museum will be something that can be left behind for the younger generation he said.

The stork was kept busy as Ipoh became a city today, delivering 16 bundles of joy between midnight and noon, at the Ipoh General Hospital and the Fatimah Hospital.

8 women and 20 men are canoeing down the Sungai Kinta to mark Ipoh City Day. The 28 members expedition from the Perak Recreation Club will row 56 km downstream from Ipoh to Teluk Intan. The expedition members, in 11 double-seater and three single-seater canoes, were flagged off this afternoon by Ipoh Mayor Datuk Haji Umar Haji Abu. Team leader, Joharudin Johar Ali, 34, said they expected the expedition to be challenging as the water is shallow in some parts, while certain sections are rocky, also will be crossing a dam which can be tricky!

While the 28 took to the water, others took to the air to get a bird’s eye view of Ipoh, the city. The Perak Aero Club organized joy flights and their air-craft was kept busy as people soared the sky for look at their city from the air.

c.New Strait Times, Tuesday, 31-05-1988:

To top up with City Day status, there was a Mayor’s Trophy golf competition at the Royal Perak Golf Club in Ipoh on Sunday. Quantity surveyor Johnny Yap (handicap 17) scored a net 63 to become the first holder of the Mayor’s Trophy.
