The picture shows Sultan Yussuf Izzudin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Jalil, and Raja Perempuan Taayah (the Sultanah) in the throne room.

Raja Yussuf Izzudin, the 32nd Sultan of Perak was the eldest son of Almarhum Sultan Abdul Jalil. He was born on 15 January 1891 in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. His early education began at Hogan School (later known as Clifford School) and furthered at Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). In 1911, he joined the government service as a Malay probationary officer – at the state secretariat in Taiping.

In 1919, Raja Yussuf Izzudin was appointed Raja Di-Hilir; 2 years later, he became the Raja Bendahara. He was also part of the Malayan Volunteer Infantry (MVI); joining as a private in 1925, he was made a Lieutenant (2 years later), as well as a reserve officer in the Federated Malay States Volunteer Forces (FMSVF). In 1935, he was appointed a magistrate in the Kinta District. Upon the demise of his uncle, Sultan Iskandar Shah, Raja Yussuf was appointed the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) in October 1938.

Later in March 1948, he ascended the throne as the Sultan of Perak, following the death of Sultan Abdul Aziz. As Ruler of the state, he showed a great interest in the welfare of the people; he was said to have a deep love for his people and, in return, the people had great respect for him. He was said to be a simple man, ever ready to smile and shake the hand of his subjects. The Istana Iskandariah (his royal palace) was always opened to the people, as His Highness enjoyed mixing with the common people.

Sultan Yussuf married Raja Taayah binti Raja Abdul Hamid, who remained his wife until her demise in 1962. The royal couple were blessed with 5 children (4 sons and a daughter): Raja Ekram, Raja Zairan, Raja Baharom, Raja Azlan Shah (the present Sultan of Perak); and Raja Pok Saidatuliz (who was the wife of Tengku Ibrahim of Selangor).

In 1962, Sultan Yussuf suffered a partial stroke; thus, his public appearances were gradually reduced. However, he still took occasional drives in the evenings through the outskirts of Bukit Chandan. About 10 weeks later, he passed away (at the age of 72) at his home (Istana Iskandariah). Sultan Yussuf was succeeded by Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakkil Alallahi Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Shah Kadassallah.
