The Triumph Owners Club, Perak - A Self Adhesive Car Badge And A Brief History
The image above shows a small (4cm diameter) self adhesive badge made from metal (brass?) which was the Triumph Owners Club insignia from August 1964, one year after the club was reformed from the Triumph Herald Owners Club founded on 17 September 1961. Prior too that the Herald Owbers Club had their own badge.
The Club, formed on 17th September 1961, was initially called the Triumph Heral Owners' Club Perak. The members were owners of Triumph Herald cars and they gathered to discuss their mutual affliation for such cars, as well as getting their cars to perform tricks. Later on, membership was extended to those who owned other Triumph cars and Bond cars too. With that, the club's name changed to the Triumph Owners Club Perak. Even the club's badge (which originally included a Herald) was changed around the time of the club's 2nd Anniversary. Founder members of the club include: William Pillay, Rex Jansz, Khaw Kok Seng, T L Acton, Foo Ah Moh and Ms Margaret Chong Nyuk Nyow.
The Club's first Newsletter was published in January 1962; about a year later the Newsletter was called the Bulletin. The Bulletin then had a make-over in April 1967 - from one foolscap sized page to half a foolscap page, carrying a KDN permit and a printed cover page (like the present one). Since then, the Bulletin's form barely changed.
From past records, it is clear that William Pillay served as the Honarary Secretary of the Club; the exception being in 1966 when Mrs Lucille Southwell took over for a while. William was also the Competition's Secretary for many years. The post of Honarary Treasurer was held by Yau Kin Mun since June 1966. In May 1968 Barry Jansz joined the Club while Rex Jansz left a month after. Besides the usual gymkhanas and rallies, the members of the Club had various other gatherings such as film shows, picnics, treasure hunts, dinners, and so on. Within the first ten years of the Club's formation, the number of members had risen - 52 full members and 18 associate members.
