Raja Chulan, Second Son Of Sultan Abdullah
The second son of disgraced Sultan Abdullah, Raja Chulan (Later Raja Sir Chulan) was born in Tanjong Brambang, Perak and educated in Singapore and Malacca. He returned to Perak in 1886 and was appointed Attache Secretariat. His full name was Raja Chulan ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah II Habibullah
Meanwhile his father was in exile in the Seychelles having been implicated in the assassination of J W W Birch, the first Resident of Perak under the Pangkor Treaty. Consequently in 1889, Raja Chulan visited his father and on return (in 1890) took up the post of Resettlement Officer Batu Kuran, Larut, Perak, transferring to Parit Buntar in a similar appointment in 1894. 1896 saw him move again, this time appointed as Acting Collector of Land Revenue Kuala Kangsar and Assistant District Officer Selama.
In 1900 he married Raja Puteh Kamariah, eldest daughter of Raja Permaisuri, wife of Sultan Idris, Sultan of Perak and consequently, in 1902, he accompanied the Sultan to England to attend the Coronation of King Edward VII. On return took up a new appointment as District Officer Upper Perak and Assistant District Officer Kuai.
He was appointed as a member of the Perak State Council (1906-1933) and the Federal Council (1924-1933).
A sporting gentleman he was a member of all the Perak Clubs and also took on the role of ‘Visitor’ to both prisons and hospitals.
