Remark : The La Sallian brotherhood of educationalists ran their organization in a strictly businesslike manner and their modus operandi for the Straits Settlements became an ordinance within the Singapore Statutes. One chapter defined the role of the nominated Brother Visitor. Brother James Byrne was nominated in that statute and acted as Brother Visitor from 1912 to 1946.
The Brother Visitor, a traveling Appointment, involved:
Born on 22 September 1869, Brother James first joined the staff of St. Xavier's in Penang, the first La Sallian school in Malaya. He was eighteen. In 1901 he became the Director (Principal) and in 1912 was re-appointed Brother Visitor with a responsibility of covering 12 schools in 5 countries including the whole of Malaya (with six schools), Mandalay, Moulmein and Rangoon in Burma, Hong Kong, Colombo (Ceylon) and Manila in the Philippines. Consequently he was always on the move by ship or by rail Nonetheless, it was in his first year as visitor that he assisted Father Coppin in Ipoh with setting up SMI and appointing P J Morsingh as headmaster.
Brother James was credited with a large number of achievements which greatly contributed to the education of young people in British Malaya and further afield and this was recognized by the award of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the British Crown. Based in Penang, he passed away there on 12 July 1947 and was buried at the Western Road Christian Cemetery.
