An Original Coolie Basket
This large but shallow coolie basket, would have been one of a pair carried around the streets of Ipoh on a ‘coolie pole’ (also known as a Nasi Kandar Stick). It is a mixture of cane and rattan and measures 72cm x 60cm x 88cm high overall. The bottom is protected from wear by four pieces of wood, secured by wire, and the rim is also protected by an old bicycle tyre being wired to it. It is believed that this particular basket was for the sale of fresh fish although the Chinese characters on the side are too worn to decipher.
